It is with great sadness that the U.S. District Court reports the death of U.S. Magistrate Judge Donald C. Ashmanskas, who passed away suddenly Monday, July 18, 2011, while working in his community garden.

"Judge Ash," as he was fondly known, was a joy to be around. His charm, keen intellect, and sharp wit were legendary. Whether he was sitting on the bench, speaking at a CLE, or walking around downtown Portland, he invariably had something interesting, thoughtful, and kind to say. He was a great judge and a great man. We will miss him dearly.
