The instructions below describe search strategies to target judicial opinions from the District of Oregon on GovInfo:

Search by Court Name

Using Basic Search, enter courtname:(United States District Court District of Oregon)

Search by Court Code

Using Basic Search, enter courtcode:ord

Other Search Strategies

Multiple metadata field operators can be combined when searching, for example, courtcode:ord publishdate:range(2020,2026) would yield judicial opinions from the District of Oregon from between 2020 and 2026. More information about using keywords and search operators are posted on GovInfo’s help page.

Search by Case Number

Opinions with a particular case number.

• Using Basic Search, enter collection:uscourts casenumber:(case number) or the shortened version of the case number, e.g., X:YY-cv-XXXXX, X:YY-cr-XXXXX, or YY-XXX.
• Using Advanced Search, select 'United States Courts Opinions' under Refine by Collection > Search In, select 'Case Number' from the first box and enter the case number or shortened version in the text box.

Search by Case Name

Opinions with a particular case name in the title field.

• Using Basic Search, enter collection:uscourts title:(case name).
• Using Advanced Search, select 'United States Courts Opinions' under Refine by Collection > Search In, select 'Title' from the first box and enter the case name in the text box.

Search by Judge

Opinions with a particular judge's last name in the docket text.

• Using Basic Search, enter collection:uscourts dockettext:(judge Judge's Last Name).
• Using Advanced Search, select 'United States Courts Opinions' under Refine by Collection > Search In, select 'Docket Text' from the first box and enter the judge's name in the text box.

Search by Keyword

Opinions with a particular keyword in the full text.

• Using Basic Search, enter collection:uscourts keyword.
• Using Advanced Search, select 'United States Courts Opinions under Refine by Collection > Search In, select 'Full-Text' from the first box and enter the keyword in the text box.

Search by Date Published

Opinions published on a particular date or between a range of dates.

• Using Basic Search, enter publishdate:YYYY-MM-DD or publishdate:range(YYYY-MM-DD,YYYY-MM-DD)
• After searching using Advanced Search, select a year, multiple years, or expand to reveal months by clicking > under Date Published.

Search by Order Title

Opinions with a particular phrase in the docket text.

• Using Basic Search, enter collection:uscourts dockettext:("order title").
• Using Advanced Search, select 'United States Courts Opinions' under Refine by Collection > Search In, select 'Docket Text' from the first box and enter the order title in the text box.

Search by Code Section

Opinions that reference a particular code section in the full text.

• Using Basic Search, enter collection:uscourts "code section".
• Using Advanced Search, select 'United States Courts Opinions under Refine by Collection > Search In, select 'Full-Text' from the first box and enter the code section in the text box.
